The best genetic combination in breeding ideal free-range chicken is using an Oriental rooster over Heritage hens.
This is my response to queries on how to produce a strain of free-range chicken resilient to common poultry diseases while the meat tastes much like the native chicken.
The Oriental rooster is the Asil, locally known as Parawakan, Basilan or Jolo.
The best female Heritage breeds are Plymouth Barred Rock and Black Australorp.
With this combination, the farmer-breeder produces well-bodied, fast growing and prolific laying free-range strain.
The meat is thicker and better than the lean native chicken.
Most of the offsprings will come out black and some will retain the barred feathers.
