The country’s leading Aquaculture Equipment Manufacturing Company, INCA Mariculture Plastics, has completed the design of the proposed floating cages for “Ulang” or Freshwater Lobster Farming in the vast Liguasan and Libungan-Torreta Marsh.
Today, INCA’s Andrew Sedigo, manager for Mindanao, will join me and the team from the Southeast Asia Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) in conducting an inspection of prospective areas in Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur and Mother Kabuntalan, Maguindanao del Norte, towns which are located in the periphery of the marsh.
The SEAFDEC team which arrived from Iloilo last night is headed by Dr. Sheryl Avanceña with Therese Geanga, Marwin dela Cruz and Janice Tambirao sa members.
The SEAFDEC team was formed by Director Dan Baliao following my request for a study on the viability of Freshwater Lobster Farming in the marsh which is a natural habitat of these large lobsters called “Pahe” locally.
The SEAFDEC team will also conduct water analysis to determine the availability of natural food for the Freshwater Lobsters which is highly in demand in both the local and international market.
The Liguasan and Libungan-Torreta Marsh has an estimated area of 250,000 hectares.
