The City Government Kidapawan, one of the areas in Cotabato Province with reported cases of the African Swine Fever, is buying healthy hogs from farmers at P140 per kilo as a pre-emptive measure to protect hog raisers from losses.
The P140/kilo buying price is P20 higher than the current market price for live hogs.
Kidapawan City Mayor Paolo Evangelista said the hogs which will be purchased by the LGU from farmers must undergo tests for ASF.
Hogs found positive for ASF virus will be culled, the Mayor said.
Hogs which are declared free from ASF will be slaughtered in the city’s Double “A” Abattoir which was built by the Dept. of Agriculture.
The pork will be sold through the City’s Kadiwa Market on weekends and during barangay fiesta.
“The income that will be generated from this scheme will be used to assist farmers whose hogs were affected by the ASF,” Mayor Evangelista said.
He said the City has allocated P3.7-M as a rolling capital for this program.
This is a model of an LGU-led intervention which should be replicated by other ASF-affected towns.
