Legislative Agenda #9! Gov’t Must Develop More Renewable Energy Sources

In anticipation of the greater demand for power in the rural areas for the activation of local industries and the shift of agriculture and fisheries towards processing and manufacturing, there must be greater focus on developing local sources of energy.
These would include Mini-Hydros, Solar Energy Farms and Wind Farms, especially in island municipalities or provinces.
The cost of power and the unreliable supply are two of the reasons why many investors shy away from the rural areas of the Philippines.
Local Electric Cooperatives must be allowed to develop their own sources of energy in partnership with the private sector or even Local Government Units.
LGUs, especially those located in the islands which are off-grid, should look at Mini-Hydros, Solar and Wind Farms as potential Economic Enterprise projects which would ensure steady power supply for its growing industries.
We have to be less dependent on the traditional energy sources like Coal which is now used in supplying 44% of our country’s total energy requirements.
Government must lead the way in this shift by installing Solar-Powered Energy Generation Facilities in all government offices to lessen government expense on electricity.
