ZAMBASULTA GETS SUPPLY
OF NFA, COMMERCIAL RICE
By Manny Piñol
The City of Zamboanga and the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawitawi will soon get fresh stocks of rice enough to feed the people of the region for six months.
The National Food Authority Council (NFAC) today approved the recommendation of the Department of Agriculture (DA) for additional NFA and commercial rice stocks allocation totalling 2.6-million bags in 50 kilos.
The 2.6-million bags will come from the unused import allocation under the Minimum Access Volume (MAV) quota of the NFA.
The initial rice stocks will be provided by the National Food Authority to supply the needs of the area until the arrival of the 32,000-metric tons of imported rice.
As of August 28, the NFA rice stocks of the ZAMBASULTA Area could last for an average of 10 days.
The NFA Council authorized the NFA to reposition some of its inventory to support the ZAMBASULTA area until the first 32,000-metric tons of commercial rice are shipped in.
The ZAMBASULTA area used to rely on smuggled rice from Sabah.
When the smuggling operations were stopped a month ago, the area suffered from a shortage of rice supply.
The NFA stepped in and shipped 180,000 bags to the area.
Naval boats have been requested to support the shipment of the rice to the islands.
