The Mindanao Halal Beef Program needs two more participating Local Government Units to be able to hit the target of producing 3.5 million kilos of Beef from 10,000 fattened Cattle every year.
Already, three LGUs have signified intent to join the program namely Kidapawan City, Iligan City and Kolambugan, Lanao Del Norte.
The initial number of five LGUs is needed because one medium size Livestock Vessel from Australia has a minimum capacity of 5,000 heads of Cattle.
Under the program, these LGUs will be first asked to establish at least 1,000 hectares of Sorghum Farms to serve as the source of feeds for the Cattle to be fattened.
The next step is to link them up with government financing institutions like the Development of the Philippines or the Land Bank of the Philippines to fund the establishment of a Cattle Fattening Feedlot which could accommodate 1,000 to 2,000 heads per 100-Day Fattening Cycle.
The Department of Agriculture through the National Livestock Program will provide seeds for the Sorghum Production program which will produce feed grains and Silage from the stalks after harvest.
With a ratio of 20 heads of Cattle which could be fed with Sorghum Silage for the whole year from every hectare of Sorghum, a 1,000-hectare area could sufficiently provide silage for 20,000 heads in a 100-day fattening cycle.
The National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) will be asked to support the program by establishing Halal Slaughterhouses in the participating LGUs.
The LGU Cattle Feed Lots will be operated by private management group led by outstanding Overseas Filipino Worker Arnel Corpuz who worked as Manager of a 50,000-head Wagyu Feedlot in Australia for 11 years.
This program which I designed will not only increase Beef production in the country but also create income opportunities for LGUs and the local farmers.
The future and prospects of Halal Meat Production are awesome.
The Straits Research made this projection about the Market Prospects of Halal Meat (which could include Goats and sheep):
“The global halal meat market size was valued at USD 870.4 billion in 2023. It is estimated to reach a predicted value of USD 1,654.8 billion by 2032 at a CAGR of 7.4% during the forecast period (2024-2032).”
A $1.654-Trillion market eight years from now should make the LGUs realize that if the Halal Meat Production Program is started now, Mindanao could be a major player in the national and global Halal Meat Industry.
