After a record harvest of 2,631-kilos from a 3,300-sqm Trial Farm in Alamada, our small company, Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc., has started a test to determine the yield for Sorghum’s first “Ratoon.”
“Ratooning” is the ability of plants like sugarcane and even Rice to grow tillers after being cut at ground level.
In the case of Sorghum, it could grow tillers after the first and second harvest providing the farmer an opportunity to harvest three times with just one planting.
It will SAAVI, a company headed by former Senator Ping Lacson which we formed with several friends last year, will thus become the first agricultural company to conduct a documented study on the Sorghum yield during the first and second Ratoon.
The small field in Pigcawaran, Alamada owned by Barangay Chairman Max Arat will become a historic site for Philippine Agriculture.
This will be the first documented study of Sorghum yield in “Ratoons.”
When I visited the area on Wednesday, the tillers were already over six inches tall.
What needs to be done would be to apply a mix of organic and synthetic fertilizer after which we will hill-up the rows.
Since there would be an increase in the tillers from one stalk, I have instructed that we increase our fertilization volume.
This early, I am very excited to see the results for the first Ratoon.
Looking at the vigorous growth of tillers which effectively increased our stalks density 3 times, I expect a very positive output.
