Three first-term Mayors in Mindanao are championing the Integrated Farming System (IFS) which starts with planting Sorghum and Soybeans leading to the development of the livestock industry.
Kidapawan City Mayor Paolo Evangelista, Iligan City Mayor Frederick Siao and Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte Mayor Allan Omamos have embraced the IFS program which aims to first develop the grains industry to support succeeding agricultural activities like Cattle, Goat and Sheep breeding and fattening.
The program will turn these LGUs into major meat production centers which would contribute to the Food Security Program of the country.
I decided to engage pro-active LGU chief executives in Mindanao mainly because compared to national government agencies whose budget preparations take a lengthy process which pass through Congress, LGU Chief Executives, supported by their local legislative councils, could approve and fund projects by simply approving a supplemental budget.
Among these three LGUs, it is Kidapawan City which is ready to implement the IFS because it has an existing program which provides its farmers loans and farm inputs to plant cash crops.
It also has a Buy-Back Program where farmers’ produce are bought by the Economic Enterprise Office of the City.
Kidapawan City Mayor Paolo Evangelista said with the support of the City Council, Kidapawan could start with its Cattle Breeding and Fattening Program as early as the First Quarter of 2025.
It already has areas which could be turned into Cattle Breeding and Fattening Feedlots and an existing Double A Slaughterhouse.
