The Philippines has the 5th Longest Coastline in the world and it has the potentials of becoming a major Fisheries and Aqua-Marine commodities producer.
What do we need to do?
1. Establish Post Harvest Facilities in Key Fishing Grounds equipped with Ice-Makers, Blast Freezers, Cold Storage and Refrigerated Transport Facilities;
2. Boost Fish Farming by establishing Government-Funded Fish Hatcheries in key regions of the country which would make available fingerlings of Bangus and high-value fish species, including Crabs, Oysters, Abalones, Sea Cucumbers and others;
3. Establish a Marketing System supported by an efficient Logistics Support which would ensure fast delivery of highly-perishable products. The earlier proposal to utilize refrigerated sea vessels to be called “Food Boats” should be considered.
How much would be the capital investment?
It will not even cost the government more than P2-B, that’s one-third of the cost of a span of a Skyway in the metropolitan area.
The impact would be tremendous as this could result in food security, jobs and income opportunities.
