IN SELECTING BREEDERS,
CHECK BODY STRUCTURE
By Manny Piñol
When breeding backyard chicken, it is important that the farmer must personally feel the body conformation of the prospective breeders.
In my farm, for example, I personally make the selection of my breeders even if I have workers taking care of my chicken.
I also personally set the breeding yards by selecting which roosters are bred to which hens.
The most important qualities of a breeding material are the broad shoulders and round body.
I am also more inclined in breeding towards Oriental features marked mainly by the pea comb or rose comb.
Chicken heavy with Oriental blood tend to be more resilient and disease-tolerant.
I am also breeding towards the dark color with black legs which I believe would set “Manok Pinoy” distinctly from commercial meat chicken.
While there is no 100% assurance that these qualities will automatically be transferred to the offsprings, this method of selection of breeders is the most practical for the farmer.
I hope this lesson that I am sharing would help educate our farmers on backyard and free range chicken.
