BUKIDNON VEGGIE FARMERS
GET P250-M DA LOAN, EQPT
By Manny Piñol
Talakag, Bukidnon, Dec. 26 – On my way to Surigao City from Kidapawan City today, I took the long route by passing through Banisilan town in North Cotabato and Wao, Lanao del Sur for my fourth visit to Talakag, Bukidnon.
Talakag is one of the four towns of Northern Bukidnon, bordering Lanao del Sur which the Department of Agriculture (DA) has identified as high-value vegetable production area.
The three others are Impasugong, Sumilao and Lantapan which along with Talakag form the IMTASULA vegetable production region.
During the recent devastation of vegetable farms in the Northern Luzon by Typhoon Ompong, vegetable farmers from Talakag shipped vegetables to Metro Manila at very low prices which helped stabilize the prices snd supply.
The DA has already committed a production loan fund of P250-M for the IMTASULA vegetable farmers, farm to market roads, training, high value processing facilities and Solar Powered Irrigation Systems.
Tractors and work animals have already been delivered to the region.
When I dropped by today for a quick meeting with farmer leaders and a lunch of Paksiw na Isda, Sardinas and Tinolang native Manok, I was told that the price of Cabbage was P10 per kilo and Carrots at P15 per kilo.
I was happy to learn the the officials and farmer leaders of the four towns have already started crafting the Road Map for Vegetable Development.
The IMTASULA Vegetable Production Region aims not only to produce enough vegetables for the country’s needs but also for export.
Their first foreign market target is Singapore and their products are expected to be displayed in the Philippine Agri Show in Singapore March next year.
The event will be part of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Philippine-Singapore diplomatic relations.
