In an amazing display of volunteerism, some 3,000 “habal-habal” and tricyle drivers offered to help me monitor cases of vote buying and election violence in my home province of North Cotabato.
Following a series of vote buying incidents in the province, I came up with the idea of involving ordinary people in the campaign against vote buying and terrorism.
This is in support of the call of President Rody Duterte to put an end to violation of election laws especially vote buying.
I was also doing my part as the newly-designated Cabinet Officer for Regional Development and Security (CORDS) for Central Mindanao.
I asked friends to design an ID for DUTERTE VOLUNTEERS FOR CLEAN, HONEST AND PEACEFUL ELECTIONS.
We asked for 600 volunteers who would be given ID, T-Shirt and 2 liters of fuel but over 3,000 came.
Some of them looked disappointed when they were told that they could not be given IDs but appeared pleased when I thanked them for volunteering.
I felt bad too that not all could be given IDs but I was overjoyed with the realization that people, inspired by the leadership of President Duterte, are selflessly offering their services to achieve change.
