Soybeans, a highly critical crop both for food and feeds, is a heavily imported commodity with negligible to nil production locally.
Every year, the Philippines imports 3.3-Million Metric Tons from the U.S., Brazil and other countries valued at over P100-B.
Import dependence for Soybeans could be greatly reduced soon with the Soybeans and Sorghum Programs I am initiating in North Cotabato.
Even with very little government support and the difficulty of accessing financing from government lending institutions, I have set a target of 100,000 hectares for Soybeans and 500,000 hectares for Sorghum within the next five years.
This could be fasttracked with government support.
I have already submitted to both the Development Bank of the Phils.and Land Bank of the Phils financing program for farmers who will plant both Soybeans and Sorghum.
As usual, the response is very slow.
Philippine Agriculture must consider the following crop rotation formula: Soybeans-Sorghum-Sorghum-Soybeans.
It could also consider Soybeans-Corn-Soybeans and Soybeans-Upland Rice-Soybeans.
We have proven that Soybeans could be grown in North Cotabato and almost all areas of Mindanao.
The adoption of Soybeans as a new agricultural crop and the Buy-Back Scheme that we offer could reduce our dependence on imports and boost our poultry and livestock industry.
