About five years ago, a friend and outstanding farmer Ben Lao of Bansalan, Davao del Sur shared with me planting materials of Oregano, a culinary herb, which he said improved the health of his free-range chicken.
In fact, Ben told me that with Oregano and a few other dried leaves of herbs given to his free-range chicken, he was able to raise them without vaccination or immunization.
Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) is native to northern Europe where it is cultivated commercially and the “fresh and dried leaves are used as a source of flavouriing,” according to an article posted in Healthline.
“Oregano is high in antioxidants, which can help prevent damage by neutralizing disease-causing free radicals,” the article added which could explain why Ben’s chicken were immune to bacteria attack.
I planted the Oregano but failed to conduct an experiment on my Manok Pinoy.
Yesterday, while checking on the Agarwood seedlings which I planted in the side of a cliff in my farm, I noticed the Oreganos growing wild and remembered Ben Lao.
I decided to collect the growing Oregano to start a propagation program by cutting the stems and growing these in seed bags.
When I have grown enough, I will do what Ben suggested – dry the Oregano leaves and include these in the feeds I will give my Manok Pinoy, especially the chicks.
