APEC Agri Ministers Meet PHILIPPINES NAMED ‘POSTER BOY’ IN CLIMATE CHANGE PREPAREDNESS

By Manny Piñol
City of Piura, Peru – A top official of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) has named the Philippines the “Poster Boy” in the advocacy to prepare for the ill-effects of Climate Change during the APEC Agriculture Ministers meeting in the City of Piura, Peru.
ABAC Director Tony Nowell of New Zealand said the Philippine report on its preparations for the effects of Climate Change has made it the leading nation in tackling the issue.
Nowell was one of the key leaders in the APEC Agriculture Ministers’ Conference which ended on Sept. 27 who expressed appreciation for the very clear and consistent message conveyed by the Philippines in a report I made during the last day of the conference.
Among those who congratulated the Philippine delegation for the “excellent presentation” on the issue of Climate Change were the host country Peru, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia and several other delegations.
The Philippines was the only delegation which submitted to the conference a well-prepared Power Point Presentation on the topic of climate change.
In the presentation titled “World Food Supply Amid Climate Change: Prepare, Adapt or Die,” I emphasised the devastation suffered by the country following a series of natural calamities, the worst of it was Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda.
The report which I made indicated how the Philippines is adjusting to the threats of Climate Change by coordinating the efforts of the different agencies, including the weather bureau, PAGASA, in protecting the Filipino farmers and fishermen.
At the end of my report, however, I told the conference that the world must prepare for the worst because of indications that the fish catch has dwindled over the years and that the climatic changes will also affect the productivity of the land.
The country’s new status as the “Poster Boy” of the advocacy for Climate Change Adaptation could result in the Philippines receiving support in many of its activities for disaster preparedness and mitigation.
