ASF Watch! DA-BAI DEPLOYS ‘MEAT K9s’ IN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS

The Philippines strengthens its control against the entry of pork and pork products by deploying the first 15 ‘Meat Sniffing’ Dogs in all international airports all over the country.

This developed as the Department of Agriculture issued an order banning the entry of pork and pork products from Cambodia following a reported outbreak of the African Swine Fever in that country.

The World Animal Health Organization or OIE has confirmed the ASF outbreak in Cambodia.

Fifteen German Shepherds from Talisay City, Negros Occidental K9 Field of Dreams will be commissioned by the Bureau of Animal Industry shortly after the dogs have undergone an area familiarization.

Department of Transportation Secretary Arturo Tugade has approved the Department of Agriculture’s request for the deployment of the K9 unit.

The initial batch of K9s, all German Shepherds, will be stationed in areas before the Customs counter of the International airports.

Another 40 dogs are now being trained for meat sniffing and will be deployed in two months.
