At NAIA BAI CONDUCTS TEST RUN FOR MEAT-SNIFFING K9s

The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) conducted today the first test run of a squad of meat-sniffing dogs at the Manila International Airport as part of the country’s protective measures against the entry of pork and pork products from countries affected by the African Swine Fever (ASF).
Acting BAI Director Dr. Ronnie Domingo said the K9s successfully sniffed a bag with frozen pork but failed to detect beef and processed pork in different bags.
A test sweep of luggages at the baggage carousel also failed to produce results.
“Test with raw frozen pork successful. Test with beef and processed pork failed. Will train again for two weeks. Retesting after two weeks,” Dr. Domingo reported.
Another group of 30 dogs are now being trained in addition to the first 15 and will be fielded in two months.
The K9 meat sniffers will be permanently assigned in all international entry points of the country to check pork and meat including processed products brought in without the needed sanitary permits.
A fine of P200,000 will be slapped against those caught bringing in illegal pork and meat.
