The simple process of conducting field tests of the Soil Profile of the farmlands in North and South Upi yesterday, proved to be a critical factor which could save farmers from another year of failed production.
Using modern but portable Soil Testing Equipment, technicians trained by Filipino-American farmer-scientist yesterday analyzed Soil samples submitted by farmers who are joining the Sorghum and Soybeans Integrated Farming Program that we are introducing in the mountain towns of North and South Upi, Maguindanao del Norte.
Tests showed that the pH level ranged from a slightly acidic 6.5 to highly acidic 5.2 which if not discovered could have led to a failure of the program.
The Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium present in the soil ranged from Medium to Low which would help us compute the amount of N-P-K which would be introduced based on target yield.
The Neutral pH is 7 and both Sorghum and Soybeans would grow well in areas with 6.5 to 7 pH but in highly acidic soil, the growth would be stunted.
Farmers validated the findings saying that Corn planted in their farms were stunted resulting in losses for them.
As a result of the tests, our technicians will be introducing the application of lime to address the soil acidity.
With that simple Soil Analysis, North and South Upi farmers will now have a guide on what to do with their farms.
