A group of farmers from Ilocos Norte could be instrumental in the transformation of Mindanao into a major Garlic and Onion Production area in the country.
It all started when an old friend and Batangas-based agri-businessman, German Panghulan, asked me to help him find a location in Mindanao for Garlic and Onion production.
German, who owns Vetmate Farma Corp., an agro-industrial company, had long wanted to develop the Garlic Industry in the country.
When I was Agriculture Secretary, he partnered with a Scandinavian group but nothing came out of it.
Today, he has organized a group of farmers with deep knowledge of Garlic and Onion farming to start demo farms in North Cotabato.
The Demo Farms are now being started in San Vicente, Makilala; Gaunan and Ugpay in Mlang; Baynosa, Tulunan and Rangayen and Dado in Alamada.
These Demo Farms will serve as learning sites where the farmers from San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte will show how Garlic and Onion are planted and propagated.
The group’s team leader, Joemer Salvador, has described the soil and climate in North Cotabato as “perfect” for Onion and Garlic Farming.
Soon, I expect the program to spread to nearby provinces and start the transformation of Mindanao into the Garlic and Onion Center of the country.
Thanks to German, Sonny Bonilla, Peter Acob and the Boys from the North.
