Seven years after I visited Brazil to personally check on the performance of the famous Dual-Purpose Cattle Breed, Girolando, Brazilian Cattlemen are once again offering to bring to the Philippines this outstanding cattle which holds a world record in milk production of 127.7 liters of milk in a day.
Representing the Philippines in an International Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I made a side trip to Brazil because I wanted to explore the possibility of bringing to the Philippines the Girolando cattle for beef and milk production.
The plan, however, did not push through as it was opposed by some livestock stakeholders who claimed that Brazil cattle could carry the foot and mouth disease to the country.
Last week, a Brazilian rancher, Geraldo Barboza, sent me a message saying that the FMD issue had been addressed and that they are willing to share with the Philippines the Girolando Breed.
This is an exciting development because I believe that the tropical breed which produces amazing volume of milk daily and is also a good source of beef could do wonders to our Beef and Milk Production Program.
The Girolando Breeding and Production Program could be part of the agricultural projects which I will introduce to North Cotabato if by God’s grace I will be chosen to lead the province again.
