More farmers are now interested in planting Sorghum following a record harvest of 7.8-metric tons of fresh grains in Alamada, Cotabato recently.
Among the happy Sorghum farmers are the Barangay Chairmen of Pigcawaran and Guiling, both in Alamada.
It was in the Demo Farm owned by Barangay Chairman Max Arat where the record yield of 2.631-metric tons from a 3,300-sqm. area was recorded.
Extrapolated, the estimated yield per hectare is placed at 7.8-metric tons of fresh grains.
Another Barangay Chairman, Ali Egal of Guiling says he is expecting a very good yield from his 1.3-hectare Demo Farm.
What makes farmers excited about Sorghum is the potential of producing Sorghum Silage out of the stalks which remain green even at harvest.
The farmers said this will allow them to raise Cattle and small ruminants for additional earnigs.
With the expected availability of new Hybrid Sorghum Seeds from Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc., more farmers have signified interest in adopting the new crop.
