A 50-hectare Demonstration Farm which would show the effect of Solar-Powered Irrigation on sugarcane yield will be established next month in Siaton, Negros Oriental.
This project was agreed on yesterday after sugar planters Danny Coral and Jojo Sy asked me to them address the very low sugarcane yield in the country.
They said that their average yield now is only 40-metric tons per hectare.
They added that if the yield could be increased by at least 20 metric tons, it would greatly solve the sugar shortage in the country.
I took up the challenge and next month, I will lead a team which would install a Solar-Powered Irrigation System in the field.
Our target: Increase the current production of 40 metric tons to at least 60 to 70 tons per hectare.
