A fully Filipino-owned company has designed and fabricated large Fish Tanks to allow Urban families to raise Hito and Tilapia in their backyard.
The Fish Tanks are coupled with an Aquaponics Set-up where the used water is brought to fertilize vegetables while filtering the water at the same time before pumping this back into the Fish Tanks.
This follows the same principle of the Circle of Life Aquaponics designed by Filipino-American farmer-scientist Rocky French when I was Agriculture Secretary in 2017.
Arriving in Manila today after a 2-day engagement in Palawan, I visited the processing facility of Inca Mariculture Plastics owner Ralph Cabrera and his vice president for operations Jonathan Cabasa.
My visit was in response to an invitation by Ralph Cabrera to check on their Mariculture equipment designs and make other recommendations on what else could be done to boost fish production.
They showed me the many innovations and designs the company made for Aquaculture.
Inca is the same company which manufactures the Submersible Fish Cages which could be pulled down underwater during typhoons and storms to protect the fish stocks.
This innovation will now enable Urban families to contribute to the country’s Food Security while enjoying fresh fish and vegetables that they themselves produced.
This is an innovation which Mayors of highly urbanized cities must look into and promote.
