Modern farming!
Whenever farmers talk about farm tractors, the first names that would come to mind would be the American brands John Deere, Ford and Massey Ferguson and the Japanese made Kubota and Yanmar.
Of course, there used to be Farmall, another American brand which was later renamed IH, which I learned to operate when I was a young Oblates seminarian in Cotabato City.
My older brother, Patricio, owns a Massey Ferguson while I have a Kubota which we now use in our farms and we both know how to plow the fields using these tractors.
There are less known brands of tractors which are equally as sturdy as the more popular American and Japanese tractors like the Belarus of Belarus, Argo and New Holland of Italy and the Deutz and CLAAS of Germany.
Last Tuesday, I was invited by a Philippine company, GRAINSCO, which is re-introducing the German tractor brand, CLAAS, to the Philippine Agriculture scene, to their warehouse in Cagayan de Oro City to take a look at their new units which arrived recently.
The CLAAS tractors looked impressive, especially the 95HP model, Talos, with huge differentials and a 3-speed PTO making them attractive to farmers like me.
One of the reasons why the sturdy CLAAS tractor did not make it big in the Philippine farming scene was the lack of after-sales service and the availability of spare parts.
Jojo Fresco, GRAINSCO’s promotions man in the Central Mindanao area, however, assured me that this problem had been addressed by the new dealers.
The company, GRAINSCO, has offered demo units for both the 95HP Talos and the wheel-type combine Harvester Tiger to be used in the massive Sorghum planting program in Mindanao.
So, CLAAS tractors, along with the more popular Kubota, will be among the equipment which will see action in the corn and Sorghum production areas of Mindanao.
This will give our farmers a good comparative study on the reliability of the two brands, the Japanese Kubota and the German CLAAS.
