Climate Change Challenge

AFTER 3 FRUITLESS YEARS,
LANZONES AT LONG LAST!
By Manny Pinol
It has been three years since the Longkong Lanzones I planted in my farm 20 years ago gave me fruits.
The unpredictable climate somehow affected the fruit bearing of these exotic fruit trees which in the past gave me handsome earnings.
During the last three years, rains would pour during the fruiting season from June to October and the buds just fell off.
This year, however, the buds bloomed into flowers which became fruits.
Of the over 1,000 trees I planted in my farm, only about 1/3 bore fruits this year, a far cry from the previous years when the climate was fine and I harvested truckloads of these sweet fruit.
But I am happy with what Mother Nature will give me this year.
This is one reality in agriculture which many other people do not really understand.
Farming is so unlike car manufacturing where if you have the steel and the tires, you could project how many automobiles will roll out of the factory.
Agriculture relies on so many factors – fertile land, sunlight, water and perfect climate.
A deficiency in any of these elements could mean failure.
The combination must be perfect and only one Being could make that possible – God.
Farmers will always say that successful farming is 1% hardwork and 99% prayers.
I thank God for this year’s blessings.
(Photos I took of my lanzones last weekend show fully developed fruits due for harvest September. The last two photos show the fruits I harvested three years ago.)
