Ten months after I planted the first Soybeans seeds in Central Mindanao, we have established that this heavily-imported crop grows well in the soil and climate of the region.
We are far from really understanding the requirements of Soybeans, especially in propagation and fertilization.
We missed our target yield of 2.5-metric tons per hectare and we have to work on our seeding density because we did not follow the seeding volume of at least 50 kilos per hectare.
Instead, we just planted 20 kilos, thus the population was sparse resulting in low production.
There is also a need for us to boost our fertilization, especially during the vegging stage of the Soybeans.
This month, the Soybeans Program will enter its 3rd Cycle and our targeted expansion area is between 1,500 to 2,000 hectares by the 2nd Quarter of 2024.
What makes this journey exciting is the fact that this early, the Off-Takers are queueing up because they see the wisdom of sourcing Soybeans locally.
Hopefully, before the end of 2024, we will be able to reduce our 99.99% dependence on imported Soybeans.
