AGRI SUFFERS P1.82-B
DAMAGE FROM “ROSITA”
Damages and losses from Typhoon “Rosita” (now Severe Tropical Storm) is now at P 1.82 billion, affecting a total of 90,052 hectares of agricultural areas in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Regions I, II and III with an estimated volume of production loss at 98,060 metric tons.
The increase in values is attributed to the reports of CAR, Regions I and II. These values are subject to validation.
Rice
The damages and losses for this commodity recorded the most increase with an amount of P 1.39 billion affecting 4,921 farmers in Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mt. Province, La Union, Pangasinan, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Aurora, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac and Zambales. This commodity also contributes mainly to the overall damages and losses at 76.67%
The affected area is now at 76,696 hectares out of the total rice standing crop of 543,993 hectares, while the volume of production loss is at 73,337 metric tons. Most of the affected rice crops are on their reproductive stage, which were mostly reported as partially damaged.
Region II is the most affected region in terms of damages and losses in rice amounting to P 1.20 billion (86.47%) with Isabela as the most affected province with an amount of P 745.15 million (61.84%).
Corn
Meanwhile, damages and losses are now reported in corn amounting to P 47.02 million affecting 6,824 farmers in the provinces of Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Pangasinan, Cagayan, Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya. The affected area is 6,317 hectares out of the total corn standing crop of 96,030 hectares. The estimated volume of production loss is at 519 metric tons. Most of the affected corn crops are on their seedling stage.
Region II is also the most affected region in terms of damages and losses in corn amounting to P 45.11 million (95.90%) with Isabela as the most affected province with an amount of P 37.61 million (61.84%).
High Value Crops
As for this commodity, the amount of damages and losses has increased to P 373.86 million affecting 7,375 farmers with 7,040 hectares of area and an estimated production loss volume of 24,203 metric tons.
Affected crops include coffee, fruit trees (banana, mango and rambutan) and assorted vegetables in Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino. These crops are mostly on their reproductive stage.
The increase in amount is attributed to the reports from CAR, Regions I and II.
Livestock
There are also reported damages in livestock amounting to P 2.51 million affecting 20,408 heads (20,334 poultry, 55 swine, 15 goat and 4 sheep) and 81 farmers in the province of Isabela.
Fisheries
Damages have also been reported in fisheries that total to P 881,000. Those affected in fisheries include sea urchin produce, lift nets, payao and facilities (Community Fish Landing Center (CFLC), Regional Mariculture Technodemo Center (RMATDEC), and Integrated Fisheries Laboratory (IFL)) in the provinces of Ilocos Norte, La Union and Pangasinan affecting 12 fisherfolk.
