DA Opens Biggest Small Ruminants Breeding Facility In North Cotabato!
By mid-2025, the Department of Agriculture, in partnership with a North Cotabato farmers’ cooperative, will start breeding Australian White Dorper Sheep and Spanish Goats from the United States of America.
The Mindanao Small Ruminants Nucleus Farm (MSRNF), a pet project of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr., will produce breeding materials to upgrade the country’s existing Sheep and Goat population.
With the support of the late DA Undersecretary for Livestock DV Savellano, I designed this program which was presented to Sec. Laurel in November 2023 for approval.
The new Undersecretary for Livestock, Dante Palabrica, gave full support to the project after taking over the NLP following the death of Usec. Savellano.
A total of 3,500 Dorper Sheep and 140 Spanish Goat breeders will arrive in the Nucleus Farm this year.
The MSRNF will be operated by the Cotabato Livestock, Poultry Agriculture & Aquatic Cooperative, Inc. (COLIPAA, Inc.).
A young Veterinarian from Antipas, North Cotabato, Dr. Roland Fajardo, who graduated Magna Cum Laude in a Masteral Course in Animal Genetics in Hungary, is the Project Manager of the MSRNF.
Using modern Genetics technology, all breeding materials coming out of the Nucleus Farm will have implanted microchips to easily trace back their parental materials based on their performance in the hands of farmers.
“This will ensure that we will only focus on the breeding of outstanding Genetic lines,” according to Dr. Fajardo.
Materials produced from this program will be initially shared with Small Ruminants farmers of North Cotabato.
Sec. Laurel had earlier announced that a similar facility will also be established in other parts of the country as part of the DA’s program to develop other sources of meat.
Goat and Sheep farming could be easily boosted because of the farmers’ familiarity with raising small ruminants.
