Legazpi City – Restive Mayon Volcano which has been spewing ashes for days now appeared calm today on the scheduled visit of Pres. Rody Duterte.
Waking up in Legazpi City today after a long 12-hour land trip from Manila, I saw the beautiful Mayon from the window of my hotel room covered with clouds but quiet and calm.
Pres. Duterte earlier said in jest that he would “kick” Mayon for causing so much damage to agriculture in the towns around it because of the ashes it spewed following a series of eruptions.
The President is set to arrive in Legazpi City today to get a first hand report from local leaders led by Albay Gov. Al Francis Bichara on the extent of the damage because of the eruption.
Yesterday, I, Undersecretary Eduardo Gongona of BFAR who is a Bicolano and DA staff decided to take the long land trip from Manila to Legazpi arriving here at about 3 am.
It was a right move because the flight we were supposed to take at 2:30 pm was delayed and later cancelled.
This morning, before Pres. Duterte arrives, I will meet with farmers affected by the eruption in Guinobatan town.
