Drought Tolerant! Bukidnon Hosts Pilot Area For Non-GMO ‘Isaac’ Corn

Ten days after I resigned as Chairman of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), support keeps pouring for my advocacy to improve agricultural productivity and address rural poverty.
Yesterday, I received 8,000 kilos of dwarf corn seeds from businessman and religious leader Wyden King which he offered to be test-planted in Mindanao.
The seeds, locally developed hybrids called “Pag-asa” and “Pagpapala” had been tested in Cagayan Valley and registered harvests of up to 12 metric tons per hectare.
The Non-GMO corn seeds are among the agricultural products produced by Wyden King’s company, Abraham Holdings.
Wyden said he wanted to test the suitability of the Isaac Corn Seeds in Mindanao to offer an option to farmers who would like to produce Non-GMO corn for food.
I suggested that the pilot farm of 400-hectares be located in one compact area for easier monitoring and supervision.
On the recommendation of the MinDA technical team, the Province of Bukidnon was chosen as the pilot area.
The project will be implemented with the support of the Department of Agriculture Region 10 under Director Carlene Collado.
The planting of the Isaac Non-GMO corn will be set at the start of the planting season for corn.
