With the threat of a long drought known as El Niño looms, Sorghum stands out as the best option for farmers in the country.
Sorghum, one of the five most important grains in the world, is not widely grown in the Philippines.
In fact, it is only our small company headed by former Senator Ping Lacson, Southseas Agri-Aqua Ventures, Inc. which is advocating for the planting of Sorghum.
Sorghum, whose origin is traced in Africa, only needs 25% of the water requirement of Corn.
It could thus withstand long dry spell and its leaves and stalks remain green.
Added to that, Sorghum grows Ratoon, allowing the farmers to harvest at least twice.
In the face of the El Niño threat, Sorghum could also provide Silage for Cattle, Carabao, Goats and Sheep.
The absence of forage is a major problem that Livestock farmers face during long droughts when even the grass in the grazing area turn brown.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) must now push for the planting of Sorghum especially in Mindanao.
