Yesterday, after resting my tired old body for a few hours, I finally got out of the Peermont Hotel Casino and Resort inside the massive Emperor’s Palace Complex in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Filipino trainer Aljo Jaro, who is originally from Matalam, North Cotabato and former boxer Rolando Angel, joined me for lunch at the Braza Steakhouse which serves Brazilian, Portuguese, Mozambique and other African dishes.
I had Portuguese steak, medium rare, served by two young Zulu girls, Fortunate Zikhali and Phindile Dube, who waited on us.
Both Fortunate and Phindile are university students who dropped out of school and worked as waitresses at the Braza Steakhouse hoping to earn and save some money to be able to go back to school next year.
Listening to the two Zulu girls’ story, I could not help but realize that I have heard the same stories among the youth of North Cotabato today whose parents could not afford to send them to school.
How many Fortunates and Phindiles are there in North Cotabato now who also dream of going to college, earn a degree and improve their lives?
The desire to go to school and earn a college degree is every young people’s dream – from North Cotabato to the Zululand in Africa.
Education indeed is a Universal dream and desire.
