Long before I learned in our Biology class the works of Agustinian Friar Gregor Mendel on genetics, my grandfather, Jose, and my father, Bernardo, had long applied practical genetics.
They did this by selecting the Corn ear with the biggest and most number of kernels and selecting the Rice panicles in the field with the heaviest and most number grains.
It was only when I learned about the Science of Genetics when I understood why Lolo and Tatay made those selection of the seeds that would be planted the following season.
“The observation that living things inherit traits from their parents has been used since prehistoric times to improve crop plants and animals through selective breeding. The modern science of genetics, seeking to understand this process, began with the work of the Augustinian friar Gregor Mendel in the mid-19th century,” wikipedia explained.
Combining what I observed from Lolo and Tatay and what I learned from school, I am now applying practical farm genetics in breeding my Manok Pinoy, Goats and now Soybeans.
Selective breeding is the key to higher production and better quality yield.
