My decision to bring along seedlings of Hass Avocado, Cempedak and EVIARC Sweet Jackfruit on a land trip from Cotabato to Passi City, Iloilo made me realize how hungry Western Visayas farmers are of quality fruit tree planting materials.
Following a post I made on our land trip, my staff in the Braveheart Farms & Nursery received hundreds of messages from farmers along the route to Passi City, from Misamis Occidental, Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental wanting to buy a few seedlings.
In Bacolod City, farmers waited in the Port of Bacolod until late in the evening of Feb. 8 just to get their seedlings.
The most dramatic story, however, was that of a farmer from Escalante, Negros Occidental, who rode on a motorcycle and traveled 7 hours to Passi City and another 7 hours back just to get hold of 4 pieces of grafted fruit tree seedlings.
Joel Loto said he and a friend based in Singapore are starting a small farm where they plan to raise goats and plant high-value fruit trees.
Joel’s determination to travel 14 hours back and forth just to buy 4 seedlings really touched me and it gave me the idea of establishing a satellite nursery in Iloilo, home province of our ancestors.
By doing this, I will give farmers in Panay Island access to outstanding fruit tree planting materials from Mindanao and this could start the Fruit Tree Planting frenzy in the island.
If this proves successful, other satellite nurseries could also be established in other areas later.
