Kidapawan City – For farmers in many parts of the country, native pig raising is becoming a favorite livelihood project which offers huge profits because of the very low production cost.
With people now preferring organic and naturally-grown food items, backyard-raised native pigs are in high demand in the market especially for lechon houses.
A lechon-size native pig which weighs between 25-30 kilos could fetch between P4,000 to P5,000.
For breeding purposes, native pig breeding materials sell between P8,000 to P10,000 per head.
I started my native pig raising project about a year ago with four young sows and one boar.
Today, I have over 30 heads running around a 1/2 hectare area which I enclosed with barbed wires.
I do not feed them with commercial feeds.
They are just given trinchantera leaves and corn or rice bran.
Lately, we started feeding them with banana rejects and loose Oil Palm fruits and the pigs like these new menu very much.
The Department of Agriculture is promoting native pig raising all over the country.
The Bureau of Animal Industry has a breeding station for native animals and fowls in Tiaong, Quezon.
Those interested may get in touch with your DA regional offices in your areas.
You could also send a message to Enrico Garzon, Assistant Secretary for Livestock.
