One of the advocacies that I am pushing is Government’s all-out support for local pioneering industries which use our resources, like the revival of the Iligan Steel Mills and wood processing facilities.
I believe that by supporting local pioneering industries, we wil enjoy an inclusive and bottom-up economic growth creating thousands of jobs.
Ang isang perfect example nito ay ang ChichaCorn Project ng grupo ng kababaihan sa Barangay Malangag, Antipas, North Cotabato na ang kailangan lang ay isang mechanical drier para mapadami nila ang kanilang produksyon.
This could be implemented by passing a legislation which would create the Local Industries Development Corporation.
The LIDC would have two primary functions:
1. Establish facilities for pioneering industries like Bamboo processing to be initislly operated as a government-owned corporation;
2. Support and provide technical and pump-priming funds to existing but struggling industries using local resources, like wood, minerals and others.
The impact of this advocacy was validated during a meeting yesterday with officers and members of the Metalworking Industries Association of the Philippines.
The MIAP officers who came to my farm said the local metalworking industry has the capability of producing equipment and machinery but the products are often edged out by foreign brands.
The MIAP officers told me that local metalworking companies are already producing combine harvesters and planters.
Indeed, we should replicate the South Korea model in supporting their local industries right after the Korean War which gave birth to such corporate and technology giants like Samsung and Hyundai.
This is achievable if the needed enabling legislations are introduced and passed in the Senate.
