Farm fresh! FRUIT SEASON IS LATE BUT HARVESTS START By Manny Piñol

Unpredictable Clmate has changed the fruiting season in Kidapawan, capital of North Cotabato, which proudly calls itself “The City of Fruits and Highland Springs.”
It used to be that as early as July and August, the highway from Cotabato City to Davao City would be adorned with colorful tents selling all kinds of fruits from Rambutan to Lanzones.
This was not the case this year. In fact, Kidapawan City celebrated its Timpupo Festival or Fruit Picking Festival, with barely any fruits.
The fruiting season is late, a clear result of Climate Change which has made everything in Agriculture unpredictable.
Yesterday, I checked my Longkong Lanzones, most of which are about 20 years old, and found out that buds are starting to pop out.
It would take about three more months before they would be ripe and ready for the market.
Fruits are still scarce and the price still a bit high compared to the usual P10 per kilo for Rambutan and P30 per kilo for Lanzones.
But if you miss the taste of farm fresh durian or naturally ripened Binangay banana, an additional P20-P30 per kilo is not really a big issue.
