One of the secrets to a successful free-range chicken farming is ensuring that you do not fall into the “Inbreeding” pit.
Inbreeding is basically allowing closely related fowls to breed over a period of time resulting in the deterioration of the flock.
Succeeding generations would be smaller, produce less eggs and become vulnerable to diseases.
Hybridization is the only way out and this involves introducing new genetics to a flock.
In breeding “Manok Pinoy,” the dual-purpose free-range chicken I developed 14 years ago, I made sure that I bred two distinct families.
The males produced by Family “A” were bred to the females of Family “B” and the “B” males were paired with the “A” females.
Aside from this, I also keep foundation lines like the Asils for size and meat and heritage chicken for the brown eggs.
This is actually practical farm genetics which farmers must understand.
