At long last, through actual farm experiments, we have successfully formulated a Chick Starter Feeds which could prevent Vent pasting.
The farm-formulated Chick Starter is called “First 15 Days” simply because it is designed to be given to your chicks during the first 15 days to prevent Vent Pasting.
We have used the “First 15 Days” for our chicks in the brooders and there was Zero Vent Pasting and Zero Chick Mortality, that is of course provided that you maintain a brooder temperature of 28 to 30 degrees Celsius with sufficient water.
Vent pasting o ang pagbabara ng tae ng sisiw sa puwet na sanhi ng high mortality sa sisiw was one of the biggest challenges I faced as a free-range chicken breeder.
There was a time when our mortality during the first 15 days could go as high as 20% which was very frustrating.
This problem is common among backyard chicken raisers especially those who use incubators and brooders and depend on commercial feeds for their chicks.
When Filipino-American farmer-scientist Rocky French joined me in my Food Sufficiency Advocacy in the Philippines, this was one of the problems which I presented to him.
As an Aquaculture Expert who spent 40 years breeding and producing Tilapia fry and fingerlings, Rocky had been formulating his own feeds for his fish and his chicken in his farm in Coachella Valley.
He is also formulating our Aqua Feeds now, including Poultry and Goat Feeds, in the small village-level feed mill which we are operating in Kidapawan City.
When Rocky saw the problem, he came up with a specialized Chick Starter formulation which, after an actual application, resulted in the total disappearance of Vent Pasting in my chicks.
Today, he has perfected the formulation and we are now ready to share it with our fellow free-range chicken raisers, especially the small backyard farmers.
Wala pa po itong product registration with the Bureau of Animal Industry because we would like to expand our trials.
Those who would like to participate in the expanded trials of “First 15 Days,” it is available in plastic containers with a total net weight of 550 grams and priced at P50.
