On top of the Garlic farming practices that farmers from San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte imparted during their technology sharing visit to North Cotabato last year, we have also applied innovations based on our own farm practices.
First, I established elevated plots after seeing that the demo farm in San Vicente, Makilala was inundated during the heavy rains.
Second, I used a lot of organic fertilizer which was applied on top of the elevated plots before planting which is now showing good results.
Third, I experimented on the use of the ANAA (Alpha Naphthalene Acetic Acid) which according to scientific researches is “a growth hormone which also acts as a catalyst for the new roots.”
We actually used the ANAA in our newly-grafted seedlings as protection from fungus and diseases.
Early today, I inspected the Garlic Cloves which I personally planted along with our workers on Jan. 30 and discovered that all of the 100 Garlic Cloves planted in one portion of the plots had a 100% germination.
While I did not remove the mulch in the other plots to check the growth rate, I would safely assume that our cloves germination rate is nearing 100%.
This is a big boost in our program to grow Garlic in Mindanao and we were able to discover this new innovation by simply experimenting with no fear of losing our plants.
This is the essence of modern farming, the continuous and endless effort to discover the best practices to improve our plant growth and production.
