The Garlic farmers from San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte taught us very important lessons in planting Garlic which we are applying now in our trial farms.
The Ilocano farmers, who were brought to Cotabato by VetMate Farma Corp.which is introducing Garlic and Onion farming in Mindanao, made actual demonstration on how to plant Garlic.
That, however, did not stop us from adopting innovations, one of which is planting the cloves in elevated plots to protect the Garlic from watelogging during heavy rains.
The other is the extensive use of Organic fertilizer like Guano, Dehyrated chicken manure and Guano.
We have also experimented on the use of Anaa, a root growth enhancer which we use to stimulate the growth of roots in our seedlings.
The result is very encouraging because after soaking the cloves in Anaa overnight, the sprouts would be visible the following morning.
Farming is indeed learning, adapting and innovating.
