Our recent record harvest of 2,631-kgs. from a 3,300-sqm. Sorghum Model Farm in Alamada, Cotabato could be attributed to our intensive use of Animal, Poultry and Bat Manure mixed with a little amount of synthetic fertilizer.
Extrapolated to an area of one hectare, our Record Yield of fresh grains is about 7.8-metric tons per hectare.
By far, this is the highest Sorghum yield per hectare ever recorded, a number which I believe could still go higher as we improve our planting protocols.
This record yield was achieved with only six bags of InOrganic Fertilizer, two of which is the inexpensive 21-0-0 which costs only P600 per bag.
The bigger volume of fertilization came from Chicken Manure Pellets, Bat Guano and Chicken Manure Slurry.
Animal manure is often ignored or taken for granted in our farming system.
In our experience Animal Manure and Processed Chicken Dung and Slurry have dramatic effect on the vigor of the plants.
Government should undertake a special program to utilize Animal Manure and processed Chicken Dung in our food production program.
It would not only unburden the farmers from the high cost of IrOrganic Fertilizer but also reinvigorate and rehabilitate the soil.
