Farming Tips! Use Treated Blue Bags To Protect Langka from Borers

One of the biggest challenges in Jackfruit farming is the presence of Fruit Borers.
The borers are actually worms which hatch in the young fruits of Jackfruit.
They are embedded in the fruits by fruit flies and they cause serious damage.
In our farm, we use the treated blue bags used in the banana industry to protect our Langka fruits.
We buy these bags from agricultural supplies stores in Kidapawan City or in Davao City.
These bags are very effective in protecting the young fruits from insects.
In areas where farmers do not have access to the blue bags, you could use old sacks.
To make the old sacks more effective in protecting the fruits, these could be soaked in insect repelling compounds like Malathion before using.
Other primitive ways of driving away the fruit flies and other insects include “fogging” the area regularly by burning fallen leaves.
Farmers could also spray insecticide like Karate but there would be problems with chemical residues in the fruits.
Besides, spraying has to be done regularly and it adds to the farmers’ expense.
