Myanmar’s Democracy Icon Aung San Su Kyii, who will represent her country in the ASEAN Summit in Manila, is set to view the country’s best indigenous weavers in action on April 28.
The Philippine indigenous weavers who will showcase Piña, Hablon, Ifugao, Mandaya and Tinalak weaving will be featured in the Philippine Expo of Fibers and Harvest in the lobby Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) where the leaders of the ASEAN countries will meet for the 30th ASEAN Summit.
It was actually Aung San Su Kyii, now State Counsellor of Myanmar, who gave the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries the idea to stage the Expo of Fibers and Harvest during the ASEAN Summit when she personally expressed interest in taking a look at the weaving of the world-famous Piña Fiber during the visit of President Rody Duterte in her country in March.
The initial plan was to bring Aung San Su Kyiii to Aklan to take a look at the Spanish Red Pineapple which is the source of the strong Piña Fiber but the Myanmar Embassy said there might not be enough time for the Democracy Icon to take the trip.
That was when I suggested to Undersecretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat to hold the expo instead in the PICC where other ASEAN leaders would also have a chance to see it.
The Philippine Expo of Fibers and Harvest will not only feature the country’s best indigenous weavers using local fibers but also the best products sod the different parts of the country.
The DA will set-up an exhibit highlighting indigenous, local, and artisanal agricultural products ranging from fruit such as Guimaras mangoes; pili nuts from Bicol; adlai from Bukidnon, pomelo from North Cotabato, pineapples from Davao and heirloom rice from the Cordilleras.
The Philippine Expo of Fibers and Harvest is also open to the public and prospective buyers of the handcrafted woven fibers and outstanding fruits and organic products from all over the country.
The event is the contribution of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to the successful staging of the 30th ASEAN Summit which is now chaired by President Duterte.
