After discovering a 4-year-old Breafruit Tree in a farm in Barangay Darugao, North Upi, Maguindanao yesterday, farmer and government worker Jojo Rodriguez led me to the farm where he got the root sprout which he planted.
The Mother Tree is owned by farmer Gogoy Pedallizo, who according to accounts of my relatives in North Upi is distantly related to our family.
(We have many relatives in Upi because this was the town where my grandparents, Lolo Jose Cordero Piñol and Lola Azucena Malasador Magbanua, first settled in after moving to Mindanao from Iloilo in the early 1930s. From Upi, they traversed the forests of Cotabato to settle in M’lang after the war where we were born.)
He was not in his farm house yesterday but I was able to take a video of the Mother Tree of the Breadfruit which could serve as another source of our planting materials.
The exciting development is that right after I posted the video of the Breadfruit (also known locally as Remas and Kolo) yesterday, I received many messages saying that they too have Breadfruit trees in their farm.
So, this could be the beginning of the mass propagation fo the Breadfruit whose tasty fruits could help address hunger and malnutrition in the rural areas while contributing to our Green Philippines Advocacy.
