First In Northern Luzon! 250-Has. Giant Bamboo Nursery Set Up In Amulung, Cagayan

A 250-hectare Giant Bamboo Nursery in a reforestation area managed by a religious group in Amulung, Cagayan will soon be the source of planting materials for the Luzon-wide propagation of the large bamboo species.
The Bamboo Valley Corporation, a group which was formed over a year ago to establish a Giant Bamboo Nursery in Cabagan, Isabela has decided to partner with the Earth Saver Agrotech Forestry Development Association of Amulung, Cagayan after some 50,000 GB propagules supposed to be planted along the banks of Cagayan River were left unsold.
I sent truckloads of propagules to Region 2 over a year ago in response to the cries for help from local officials following the massive flooding caused by the overflowing of the Cagayan River.
When the floods subsided so did the interest of some leaders on the planting of Giant Bamboos along the banks leaving the Bamboo Valley nursery with over 50,000 overgrown planting materials.
Bamboo Valley Corporation officers Vic Calderon and Edgar Pagulayan decided to reach out to groups interested in entering into a partnership for the establishment of a 250-hectare Giant Bamboo farm and nursery.
It was the Earth Savers led by Amulung Baptist Church Pastor Rico de Leon which responded to the offer of the Bamboo Valley Corporation since they have a 1,000 reforestation area under the National Greening Program of the government.
Bamboo Valley Corp. and the Amulung Earth Savers will share the income from the farm and the nursery on a 50-50 scheme.
The project is expected to produce planting materials which could cover at least 20,000 hectares planted to Giant Bamboo in Northern Luzon every year.
This is a perfect example of crisis turned into great opportunities.
