Flour Source! Indian Jowar Grows Well In Cotabato Demo Farm

The Indian Jowar, also known as the Indian White Sorghum, is performing very well in Alamada, North Cotabato, a traditional Corn Farming Area.
At 75 days old, the Indian Jowar in the 3,300-sqm. Demo and Trial Farm which I established in Barangay Pigcawaran, Alamada is showing great production potentials.
The emerging heads appear to be longer and heavier than the U.S. Bicolor or Red Sorghum.
I had my reservations about the suitability of the Indian Jowar in Philippine conditions because of the accounts I read that it is notoriously low-yielding averaging only 2-metric tons in India.
When friends asked me to try it, I relented and I believe I made the right decision.
Indian Jowar is commonly used for flour production, unlike its cousin the Sorghum Bicolor which is mainly used in feed production.
Checking additional information from the web, I found out that Indian Jowar has a lot of health benefits.
The website myhealthytips offers these details:
“Jowar is a good source of antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation and prevent chronic diseases. The high fiber content of jowar promotes digestive health and can help prevent constipation, bloating, and other digestive problems.
“Jowar is gluten-free, making it a safe and healthy option for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.
“The essential minerals in jowar, such as calcium and magnesium, are important for bone health and can help prevent osteoporosis.
“Jowar is also a good source of energy, making it a great food for athletes and active individuals.
“Jowar is a great food for weight loss due to its high fiber content. Fiber helps to slow down the digestion process, which makes you feel fuller for longer and prevents overeating. Jowar is low in calories and fat, making it a great option for those who want to lose weight.
“The glycemic index of jowar is lower than that of many other grains, which means it has less of an impact on blood sugar levels. This makes jowar a great food for people who are trying to manage their blood sugar levels and prevent diabetes.
How to include jowar in your diet for weight loss
“Jowar has a low glycemic index, which means it does not cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels after consumption. This makes it an ideal food for people with diabetes, as it can help keep their blood sugar levels stable.
“Jowar is also rich in fiber, which can further help regulate blood sugar levels. Fiber slows down the absorption of glucose in the bloodstream, which can prevent spikes in blood sugar levels.
“Jowar contains compounds called policosanols that have been found to lower cholesterol levels in the body. High levels of cholesterol can lead to the formation of plaque in the arteries, which can increase the risk of heart disease.
“Jowar contains several antioxidants, including phenolic acids and flavonoids, that have been shown to have cardioprotective effects. These antioxidants can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, which can lower the risk of heart disease.”
So, there. By simply trying something which had been done before, we discover a lot of opportunities in agricultural production and additional source of food for our people.
