Shortly before my trip to the US last month, I received a message from a follower of my Facebook page asking if she could visit my farm.
She introduced herself as Rapunzel Galura, a 16-year Flight Attendant of a major international airline who had been a follower of my MannyPiñol page since 2015.
Rapunzel, who turned out to be a niece of a friend and supporter, Economist Red Galura, said she dreamed of becoming a farmer when she retires.
Three days ago, she arrived in the farm in a rented vehicle and when she learned that I was going to Barangay Ned in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato for a dialogue with farmers, she rebooked her flight back to Manila and joined the team.
She was equipped with a wind gauge because she said she wanted to build a farm house in a windy area where she could plant vegetables and flowers in her yard.
Lanky and lovely, I just could not believe that a young woman who had traveled around the world would dream of retiring as a farmer in some remote area in Mindanao.
For the whole day yesterday, Rapunzel enjoyed the sight of the huge Tunas in the General Santos City Fishport, attentively listened to my lecture on Sorghum farming with farmers in Barangay Ned and enjoyed the view of Kulaman Valley.
Today, she will fly back to Manila to prepare for her return to work a few days later.
“But I will come back Sir and please help me find a small farm to buy so I could realize my retirement dream,” Rapunzel said.
I already told her where that dream farm could be found when she finally lands for the final time and settle on the ground with her flowers and vegetables.
