As the price of Wheat and Corn shoots up, we have decided to pursue the Sorghum production program which I started when I was Secretary of Agriculture.
As soon as the rains come next month, the first 500 hectares will be planted with Sorghum.
Initially, the program will cover 2,000 hectares to be planted over a period of four months to sustain the grains requirements of the Village-Level Feed Mill which we are operating in Kidapawan City.
The seeds come from a Sorghum seeds production company, Scott Seeds of Hereford, Texas, which also initially donated 20 metric tons when I was Chairman of the Mindanao Development Authority.
The inclusion of Sorghum in our feed formulation will bring down the cost of feeds.
Under the program, we will engage farmers in areas surrounding the feed mill who will plant the Sorghum which we will buy at an agreed price.
As the volume of feed production increases, we will also expand the Sorghum production area.
