FORMER WORLD CHAMP GERRY PENALOSA GIVES MARAON GOOD CHANCE TO WIN

Former world bantamweight champion Gerry “Fearless” Penalosa has told veteran journalist Ronnie Nathalnielsz that Filipino fighter Jundy “Pretty Boy” Maraon stands a good chance of winning against Dominican Republic’s Juan Carlos Payano in their fight for the vacant WBA Bantamweight title on June 14 in New Jersey, USA.

In an article written for The Manila Standard and philboxing, Nathanielsz quoted Penalosa as saying that Payano does not have that much power compared to the left-handed fighter from the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato.

Penalosa also told Nathanielsz that Payano’s defense is weak and this could be exploited by the hard-punching Maraon who is undefeated with a record of 15 wins, 12 KOs and 1 draw.

Here is Nathanielsz full report:

FIGHT VIDEO OF EDRIN DAPUDONG VS. JESUS JIMENEZ

One of the most sensational victories of North Cotabato boxer Edrin “The Sting” Dapudong was his first round demolition of Mexican Jesus “Zurdito” Jimenez in Tepic, Mexico July 3, 2010.

Edrin won the WBC Silver Flyweight title because of that victory but he lost it by decision in a succeeding fight in Cancun, Mexico a few months later.

I am posting here the Dapudong-Jimenez fight to give followers of this page an idea of the power of the boxer from Barangay Pag-asa, M’lang, North Cotabato.

On June 15, Dapudong will meet South African Gideon Buthelezi in a rematch for the IBO Junior Bantamweight title.

Their first fight ended in a controversial split decision victory for the South African fighter.

FIGHT VIDEO OF JUNDY MARAON VS. ANTHONY MATHIAS

To give boxing fans an idea of the power and skills of Jundy “Pretty Boy” Maraon, who is fighting for the WBA Bantamweight Title on June 14, I am posting here a youtube.com video of his fight against Tanzania’s Anthony Mathias.

This fight, held in Ozamis City three years ago, was his first defense of the WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight title.

Maraon, 28, fights Dominican Republic’s Juan Carlos Payano in New Jersey, USA, next Saturday, just a day before another Braveheart Boxer, Edrin “The Sting” Dapudong fights Gideon Buthelezi in South Africa for the IBO Jr. Bantamweight title.

BRAVEHEART BOXING CLUB’S JUNDY MARAON

GOES FOR WBA BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE JUNE 14

Jundy “Pretty Boy” Maraon, one of the brightest prospects of Mindanao for a world boxing title, is going up against Dominican Republic’s Juan Carlos Payano for the World Boxing Association (WBA) bantamweight title in New Jersey on June 14.

This is a surprise development for the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato which manages the 28-year-old Maraon along with California-based trainer Nonito Donaire Sr. and American boxing promoter Vinny Scolpino.

Initially, the report I received from the US was that the Maraon-Payano fight will just be a non-title fight. But with the scrapping of the main event of the card in New Jersey, the promoters decided to turn the fight into a WBA championship bout.

This is going to be a tough fight for Maraon, originally from Molave, Zamboanga del Sur, who came to the Braveheart Boxing Club through M’lang Mayor Lito Pinol several years ago.

Payano is a former Olympian and current the North American Boxing Association (NABA) champion.

Maraon’s power, however, is his big advantage going into this fight. He showed this with a stunning 6th round victory over countryman Jason Egera to win the WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight title two years ago.

Following his victory over Egera in Cebu City, Maraon defended his WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight title against Tanzanian Anthony Mathias two years ago.

An injury in his left hand, Maraon quit boxing and got married.

Donaire Sr., however, convinced Maraon to return to boxing and following a successful promotional agreement with Vinny Scolpino, I sent Jundy back to California where he is training right now in the very same gym where Nonito Donaire Jr. started.

Maraon’s last fight was a 3rd round KO over Ernie Sanchez in Sta. Ynez, California which brought him the chance to fight for the world title.

A victory by Maraon will make him the first Braveheart boxer to win a world title.
